Former chief executive of Hermes Pensions Management, Tony Watson, has been named chairman of the Marks & Spencer pension scheme.

The M&S pension trustees are notorious for refusing to meet Philip Green when he attempted to buy the retailer in 2004, in what proved to be the deciding factor in him walking away from the bid.

Watson should be no stranger to trustee activism, having run activist fund manager Hermes, which manages BT's Ł23bn pension fund.

Furniture and electrical equipment group Kesa Electricals has promoted Simon Fox to a newly created role of chief operating officer.

Fox currently runs the firm's UK business Comet but will now take responsibility for its other European businesses as well as the group's e-commerce developments.

The move has been designed to give CEO Jean-Noel Labroue more time to concentrate on Kesa's ailing French furniture chain BUT, which continues to underperform the French retail market.

Industry insiders have suggested Fox may be being groomed for the top job.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting has appointed Ray Martin a principal in its client management team based in Edinburgh.

Martin joins from brewer Scottish & Newcastle where he was human resources director.

Money manager PIMCO has promoted Emanuele Ravano to managing director. Ravano, who is a senior portfolio manager and strategist based in London, joined the firm in 2001 from Credit Suisse First Boston where he was head of European fixed income.

Edward Devlin has joined the firm's California office based in Newport Beach. He moves across from Lehman Brothers' London office.

Mark Snape has been named chief operating officer of loan and remortgage broker Compass Finance. He joins from CitiFinancial Europe where he sat on the board and was previously chief operating officer of Firstplus, Barclays Bank's subsidiary specialising in secured loans.

Law firm Lewis Silkin has hired Cliff Fluet as a partner in the media brands and technology group.

Fluet joins from Capital Radio Group where he was director of legal affairs and the company secretary.
